Week 8 - Get NZ Writing

Room 11 is enjoying the Get NZ Writing kit that is offered by Warehouse Stationary.

Today the children used the chrome books and google maps.  As a group they had to look at the journey from Valley School to Marshland School in Christchurch and write down any interesting place names they could find...

Week 8 - Inquiry through Play

This week Room 11 got to do Inquiry through Play.  I set out some activities to do with our Hauora inquiry.  They moved to activities that interested them, then played and noted down their wonderings.

Here are some photos to show you what play looks like a the middle school area which is more directed and focused...  All these activities that you see below allowed for the children to be immersed in our inquiry but without me sitting down and teaching them...

The conversations and learning that took place was amazing...

Week 7 - Mrs Massey was away this week

On Monday I was at a wonderful course to learn all about how to help children with hearing impairments.  I got to hear what it is like to wear a BAHA system which is what Gabriel wears.  It was a great moment for me to feel what it is like for him to be in Room 11.
On Friday I went down to Hamilton to attend a Play Based Learning Course for the middle and senior school.  It was such an inspirational day with lots of ideas for me to implement more playing in Room 11 but at a higher level.  I can't wait to put into practice all the things I have learnt...

Week 6 - Safe Hygiene

This week the coronavirus is all over the news.  The children were really worried so I decided to teach them about viruses and how to wash their hands. The class watch these two videos...

The out came the ice cream containers with water, hand soap and paper towels.  Lots of happy birthdays then were sung around the room as they learnt to wash their hands correctly.

Week 6 - Bruce Potter Visit

Bruce Potter came to school on Tuesday.  He is an artist, illustrator and author.
First he drew the most amazing picture in front of the children with lots of audience participation.
Then he showed the children a book he has written called Doodlebug.  There were loads of amazing illustrations that when he zoomed in the detail was incredible.

If you want to watch the song of Doodlebug have a look below...

One of his other famous books is Penny the Prolific Pooing Cow. I hope you enjoy it...

If you want to have a look at his website then here it is...Bruce Potter

Week 5 - Holiday Collages

Pop in and have a look at the magnificent holiday collages...

Here is an example...

Week 5 - Sunflower writing

We are learning how to build a picture in the readers mind by adding adjectives to our writing.

This week we went down to the garden and had a look at the beautiful sunflowers.  The children wrote while they were down there and then came back to draw some sunflowers.

The work is stunning...

Jamie and Angela had their work chosen for the Week 6 school newsletter.

Such a proud teacher moment...

Week 3 and 4 - Maths

In Week 3 I taught the children about how to feel about maths positively.  Then they got to play lots of cooperative games such as 1 - 2 NIM...  Have a look below if you want to learn how to play it...

In Week 4 they then got to put all the learning into practice and work alongside a buddy to solve some number problems.  It was fantastic to see them getting excited about maths and being so proud of their efforts.

Here are some of the problems.

Week 4 - Self Portraits

Over the past 2 weeks the children have been learning about how to build a picture in the readers mind by using adjectives.

They learnt how to sketch a picture of themselves and around the outside they glued adjectives to describe themselves.  These are such wonderful self portraits.

Here are just a few.

Pop in and come and see the rest...
