Week 6 - Saint John Visit

We visited Sue from Saint John's on Monday.  She taught the children how make good choices to stay safe while still having fun.  (Look in the other website tab on the right hand side to go to a great site to play games.)

She then showed them what to do if they got a cut or a big bruise.  She demonstrated on Yohann and then they got to have a go using the equipment.

Then she spoke about how to stay safe while on wheels like a bike, scooter, skateboard or roller blades.  Everybody helped Meela to dress up in all the safety gear.

The children now understand they must always wear a helmet and shoes when on wheels.  Below is a poster on how to wear a helmet correctly.

Week 4 - Inquiry through Play

In Room 11 the children participate in an Inquiry through Play session.  This is a time when they can use the dress ups and all the equipment in the classroom.  It is such a valuable learning time as it is self directed play chosen by the children and not by me.  The box below shows some of the benefits of this type of imaginative play.

The best part is I get to watch the play and get involved only when necessary.  I can be a coach alongside children who are struggling to solve problems with their friends, who are finding joining the play difficult or who are just not engaged.  Also to be their cheer leader when they do amazing things.  This is fantastic as all these skills translate into the playground.

At the beginning of the year I let the children explore and mostly they just love dressing up as the photos below show but later in the year they role play quite complicated games.  Also later in the year I will set up provocations where they can go and learn more about our inquiry.  It is such an amazing part of our week in Room 11.

Cooperating to put on a puppet show.  Lots of communication skills.

Cooperation again.  This time the children had to work together to design the fort making sure to share the equipment then they made up an imaginary game.

These children were in the midst of a quite complicated game but I just wanted a photo... :)

The girls worked together to create the brides outfit and then other children joined in to be part of the wedding.

Then the girls had another go at making a different bridal outfit.

Working independently to make a ramp for cars.  Lots of problem solving happening to make sure the cars run the correct speed and do exactly what you want them to.

These boys are involved in a game where the keyboards on the computer became something completely different.  I love children's imagination.

These boys were arresting the other.  This was a game that involved lots of movement around the classroom.

A couple of days later this group of girls cooperated together to make this amazing structure using the blocks.

Week 4 - Lego Self Portraits

The children had a lego boy or girl template.  Firstly, the children added their own hair and facial expression.  Then they had to design the clothing to represent themselves and things that they love.  Some of the children also chose to include things in their hands.  Here are just 4 of them.

We can't wait for you to come into Room 11 and see the rest.  They are amazing!

Merry Christmas and the last blog post ever
